I'm getting awfully tired of the word elitist......when did it start to mean "educated"? Seriously. I don't mean this is a snarky personal attack. But every time I hear someone say "elitist" in reference to any specific person or quote, what they really mean is "I'm not educated or intelligent enough to understand what they're talking about".
In fact, "elite" only has meaning within a group of ranked people. One cannot be an "elite American". There are not rankings among Americans. The military elite would be composed of generals and admirals. The hot dog eating elite compete at Coney Island every summer.
Okay, so, to me "elitist" is more of an attitude than anything attainable like money or education or genealogy. Obama, to me, is elitist. So is Biden. And, even, so is McCain. I think I have said previously that I wouldn't be voting for McCain had he not picked Palin. (I wouldn't be voting for Obama, either, I do not like him one bit.) I like Palin. I feel like she's real. I feel like she would be a good change. Hell, if Bush can accomplish things in office, she could do a lot more. Let's face it: presidents and vice presidents have many advisers. Even senators don't read every page of every bill they have to vote on; they have advisers. Does it make them less qualified if they rely on the expertise of others?
In my view, the President and Vice President of the U.S. is more of a PR role. They do the right things, say the right things in order to placate whomever it is they're talking to. They're the salespeople. Senators and Congress are the support people, the people who get things done (or not). Yes, the President can veto but the reps can override the veto. Yes, the President can appoint judges but the senate has to approve the appointment.
I am not afraid of either an Obama or a McCain presidency. I just have to vote my conscience and hope that if my candidate wins I am not incorrect.
And if it is a comfort to anyone, I have never voted for the winning ticket. ;)
I am afraid of anything Palin might accomplish. I'm not sure I agree with her on ANYTHING. And on some issues I merely disagree with her, on others, I'm appalled that anyone would agree, that she isn't ashamed to voice some of her views.
And, as I have said before, I hope to be proven wrong, but I suspect our next VP will get more presidential experience than our last few....
Judges are a pretty big thing, IMHO. Yes, the Senate gets to approve the president's choices, but they are also under pressure to approve SOMEBODY the President appoints. It becomes a lesser of the evils decision for somebody. If none of the candidates fit the Senate's "ideal" mold, they're likely to choose someone anyway.
I feel like "qualified" is such a big issue because McCain MADE it an issue in the beginning of the race. It's not so much that Obama/Biden have so much more experience, it's that McCain made a big deal about Obama's lack of experience, and then turned around and chose a VP with even less. It's the hypocrisy.
As far as salespeople....I have trouble believing anything Palin says because she looks like she's reciting lines. I have trouble believing McCain because I have heard him say too many things with a tenuous relationship to reality. Biden...I'm kind of "eh" on. I do believe Obama will try to accomplish the things he says he will. I feel like HE believes in them. Whether or not he will succeed is another story. But I do feel like he believes what he's saying, and that's he's intelligent and educated. (For what it's worth, I was for Hillary--she's actually been in the White House, she's a strong woman, and I agree with her on several issues.)
Because I don't see any of them as unnecessarily arrogant. _I_ have had trouble watching what's been going in politics for the past several years, and I don't have to be a part of it. It's really hard to appear not condescending and arrogant when faced with some of the stupidity out there. It's really hard to be a part of something, to have your ideas/bills/whatever voted down or defeated, and then NOT say "I told you so" at the current state of affairs.
The economy, the "War on Terror", our diplomatic efforts in the rest of the world....it's like one big "How could anyone be so stupid?"
And then this...Barbie doll...comes along, and reads off her cue cards, and suddenly people are excited that she's "not elitist"? She's dumb! She doesn't understand half of what she's saying or half the questions she's being asked! She thinks living near Russia is an example of foreign policy experience!!! She supports policies that have been SHOWN to fail! She supports abstinence-only sex-ed, and she has a pregnant teenager! She "never blinks"--she can't admit her own mistakes.
I can understand not being FOR Obama-Biden, but I cannot grasp why anyone is FOR McCain-Palin. He's a liar and a hypocrite, and she's just dumb. But I guess any country that was dumb enough to vote GWB BACK in is dumb enough to vote for anyone....
